Items you cannot put in a mixed skip

A few materials are restricted and must be kept out of a general skip. Knowing these in advance avoids delays on collection day.

• Plasterboard. Because it is gypsum, plasterboard must be kept separate from other waste rather than mixed in. If your renovation involves removing or replacing walls and ceilings, set it aside and mention it when you enquire.
• Electrical appliances. Old ovens, fridges, extractor fans and similar items fall under WEEE rules and cannot go in a mixed skip.
• Hazardous items. Solvents, wet paint and similar materials are not permitted.

If you are working on an older property, be aware that some may contain asbestos. Asbestos must be handled by a licensed specialist and cannot go in a skip under any circumstances. If you suspect it, stop and seek professional advice before going further.

Permits and where to place your skip
