What Is the Duty of Care?
Under UK law, anyone who produces, keeps or disposes of waste has a duty of care to make sure it is managed responsibly. In practice, that means only passing your waste to someone who is legally allowed to take it, such as a registered waste carrier.
What It Means for You
- Store waste safely so it does not escape or cause harm
- Only give your waste to a licensed carrier or authorised site
- Keep a record of who took your waste, for business and trade waste
- Check that whoever takes your waste is registered
How We Help You Meet It

Householders and Businesses
Householders have a duty of care too: never give your waste to an unlicensed operator offering cheap removal, as it may be fly-tipped and traced back to you. Businesses have additional record-keeping duties. If you are unsure, we are happy to explain.
