Do I Need a Skip Permit in Doncaster?

The rule is simple and it turns on one thing: whose land is the skip standing on. Your driveway, your garden, your yard, no permit. A public road, pavement or grass verge, permit required from Doncaster Council before it is set down.

There is no partial version. If any part of the skip overhangs the highway, that counts as being on the highway.

Who applies

Conditions that come with an on-road permit

A permitted skip has to be visible and safe. In practice that means:

• Reflective markings on the skip so it is visible after dark
• Lights or cones at night, depending on the location
• Positioned so it does not block sightlines at junctions or obstruct pedestrians, particularly wheelchair and pushchair access on a pavement
• Kept within the dates on the permit, with an extension applied for if the job overruns

Getting any of this wrong can mean a fine, and the responsibility sits with whoever the permit is issued to.

Where a permit is more likely in Doncaster

It depends almost entirely on the housing. Bessacarr, Armthorpe and the newer estates mostly have driveways, so on-road placements are the exception. The Victorian terraces around the town centre, and much of Bentley, Balby, Hexthorpe and Mexborough, frequently have no off-road option at all, and there a permit is the normal route rather than the unusual one.

The alternative worth considering

If you have no driveway and the permit timing does not work, wait and load is the way round it. The lorry stays with the skip while you load, then takes it away the same visit. Because it is never left unattended on the highway, no permit is needed. It suits a concentrated clear out rather than a job you fill gradually.
