How Long Can You Keep a Skip? Hire Periods Explained

As long as the job takes, within reason. We agree a rough collection date when you book, and if the work runs over you ring us and we move it. There is no fixed period you have paid for whether you use it or not.

That is the answer for a skip on your own land. On the road it is different, and the difference matters.

On your own driveway

Nobody is counting. If you said a week and it turns into two, that is a phone call rather than a problem. Most domestic jobs run a week to a fortnight, trade jobs vary enormously, and we would rather move a collection than have you rushing a job to hit an arbitrary date.

The only practical constraints are common sense: a skip standing for months on soft ground will sink, and a full skip left open on a driveway will collect rain, which adds weight.

On a public road

Here the permit sets the clock, not us. A Doncaster Council permit runs for a specified period, and if the job overruns you need to apply for an extension before it expires rather than after.

Letting a permit lapse with the skip still in place is the thing to avoid, because the liability sits with whoever the permit was issued to. If it is looking tight, start the extension early. The permits page covers the process.

Planning the hire period

A few things worth thinking about when you decide how long you want it:

• Renovations produce waste in waves. A kitchen job gives you a strip-out at the start and a mountain of packaging when the new units arrive. Keeping one skip across both usually beats two deliveries.
• Weather stops outdoor work. If you are clearing a garden in February, build in some slack.
• Weekend jobs slip. The clearance that was definitely going to take a Saturday reliably takes two.

When a shorter hire suits better

Not every job wants the skip standing about. Wait and load is the opposite approach: the lorry stays while you load and takes it straight away. It works for a concentrated clear out where you have the labour to fill it in one go, and it avoids the permit question entirely.
